Philip Morris closes production facilities in Berlin and Dresden: Effects on 372 jobs
A shock for the employees in Germany! Philip Morris International (PMI) plans the final closure of two large production facilities for tobacco products in the heart of the country. The works affected, Philip Morris Manu acture GmbH in Berlin and the F6 Cigarette factory in Dresden, are on the shooting list! What does this mean for the workforce and the future of tobacco production in Germany?
The Philip Morris Manuityturing GmbH in Berlin has produced cigarette raw materials since 1972. But times change! The demand for classic cigarettes has fallen dramatically in Europe and it looks as if this downward trend will continue. In a comprehensive analysis, PMI decided to end the production of "expanded tobacco" (ET) by the first half of 2025. A hard blow for the around 372 employees!
Farewell to the F6 Cigarette factory
But that's not all! The F6 Cigarette factory in Dresden, which has been producing “Other Tobacco Products” (OTP) since 2019, will also come to a standstill. Products such as fine-cut tobacco that are particularly popular for the roll-your-5-segment are manufactured here. This market has also declined in recent years, and PMI has decided to cease production in this work in mid -2025. A bitter farewell for the employees!
The management is now doing everything possible to stay in dialogue with the works councils and social partners. "We are aware of the difficult situation of our employees," emphasizes Jan Otten, Managing Director of the two works. It is checked how to offer fair solutions to those affected. A responsible step in a bumpy time!
The tobacco industry faces enormous challenges, and Philip Morris is no exception. The permanent review of the business processes has led to this difficult but necessary decision. "We respect the hard work of our employees and do everything we can to support them in this difficult phase," continued Otten. An appeal to solidarity in uncertain times!
