Roma Day 2024: Berlin sets a sign of equality

On April 8, 2024, the 53rd international day of Roma will be celebrated worldwide. This day of action serves to raise awareness of the situation of the Roma, especially its discrimination and persecution, and to appreciate its culture. The day is reminiscent of the first international Roma congress, which took place on April 8, 1971 in London and symbolized the striving for social justice and equality for the Roma. This historical event marked the beginning of a new self -confidence among the Roma, which manifested itself as a Roma in its own hymn, flag and self -designation.

As a sign of respect and equality as well as for exclusion, the Roma flag will be raised on all Berlin town halls on this day. In the Pankow district, this will take place at the town hall on Breite Straße 24a-26, 13187 Berlin.

In addition, the office for participation and integration of the Reinickendorf district in cooperation with the Hildegard Lagrenne Foundation and the Transcultural Roma Self Organization Romatrial e. V. the Romaday 24 knowledge campaign created. This campaign, which takes place for the first time in Berlin, aims to spread the knowledge of the Roma and Sinti in Berlin and Germany, to counteract anti -Ziganism and to draw attention to the international day of the Roma.

Berlin schools are encouraged to include the topic of "History and Present of the Roma and Sinti" around April 8th in class or in project days. Schools receive teaching materials and teacher forms are offered online to raise awareness of the recognized minority.

The knowledge campaign Romaday24 and the international day of the Roma give rise to reflect on the history and situation of the Roma and actively campaign against discrimination.
