Pankow, Deutschland - On June 24, 2025, the development of the mill promenade in Pankow was officially continued after the district office Pankow has advertised a planning competition for ecological upgrading and improving rainwater management. This competition, which culminated on June 19 with a jury session, aims to redesign the infrastructure around the mill promenade and thus make a contribution to climate -friendly urban development. The winning design comes from the renowned Cologne landscape architecture company Greenbox PartgmbB and was awarded for its innovative design of the urban freedom.

The design includes several elements, including three city places in different dimensions and neighborhood lodges with seating. The fountain square, as a central location of the design, is equipped with water elements and planters and contributes to the high quality of stay. The Pankower City Councilor Cornelius Bechtler in particular praised the connection to the adjacent residential development and the creation of a new green center, while the district councilor Manuela Anders-Granitzki emphasized the development of a lively public space.

Citizen participation as a key

The competition also integrated a comprehensive citizen participation. Residents had the opportunity to bring their wishes regarding the redesign of the mill promenade, which runs between Greifswalder Straße and Kniprodestrasse. These concerns were recorded in the green and open space concept of 2021. A neighborhood walk on May 13, 2023 offered 40 participants the opportunity to express their ideas.

A total of ten planning teams took part in the competition, which were selected from 38 applications. The jury consisted of experts and three advisory members who were selected by lottery. This structure guaranteed a broad opinion and interest representation in the course of the competition.

The implementation of the project is supported by the federal-state program "Sustainable Renewal" by 293,000 euros. In view of the progressive urbanization and climate change, the promotion of sustainable and resource -saving urban development components is more urgent than ever. The challenges, which are caused by more extreme weather events such as heavy rain and heat waves, require innovative approaches to water management and climate -friendly building, as the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) also promotes in its programs to create liveable spaces.

The designs of the planning competition will be publicly exhibited from July 15 to 27, 2025 in the Kulturmarkthalle, whereby the official opening will take place on July 15 at 4:30 p.m. This exhibition gives the public the opportunity to discover the visionary ideas for the mill promenade and to actively participate in the design of their environment.

With the planned redesign, not only a piece of Pankow is upgraded, but also a sign of a climate -conscious urban development that meets both the needs of the residents and the challenges of climate change.
