Pankow receives Siegel Child-friendly Community-UN Children's Rights
The district of Pankow in Berlin recently received the “child -friendly community” seal. This seal is awarded by the Association of Child-friendly municipalities and recognizes the adoption of an action plan that aims to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at the district level. With the preservation of the seal, the Pankow district undertakes to strengthen the rights of children and adolescents and to undergo regular test procedures.
The district mayor Dr. Cordelia Koch emphasized the importance of this seal and explained that Pankow works for the healthy, safe and child -friendly development of children. Children and adolescents should be included in decision -making processes and have the opportunity to represent their interests. Anja Siegesmund, deputy chair of the association child -friendly municipalities, praised the Pankow district for his action plan and emphasized the large number of planned measures that are to be implemented in the next three years.
Experts of the association Child-friendly municipalities were positive about the initiative of the Pankow district to make public spaces more children and youth-friendly. They also praised the planned creation of a investment office for children and adolescents as well as the establishment of a job for a child representative. The chairwoman of the UN Committee for the rights of the child, Prof. Ann Skelton, was also present at the handover of the seal and praised the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at the local level.
The program "Child -friendly Community" provides for a five -year accompaniment for larger municipalities (four years for smaller municipalities). After an inventory and participation procedure with children and adolescents, an action plan is created and checked by the Association of Child -friendly municipalities. The seal is then awarded for three years. The association has been accompanying cities and municipalities in the local implementation of children's rights for ten years.
A total of almost 60 municipalities in Germany have joined the “child -friendly municipalities” project, including Hanau, Cologne, Potsdam, Regensburg, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg. This project is based on international experiences from the Child Friendly Cities Initiative of Unicef and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth.
The award of the Pankow district as a "child -friendly municipality" is a significant step towards a more child -friendly and more participatory society and shows the commitment of the district for the rights and needs of children and adolescents.
