New school year, new location: Gymnasium at the EuropaSportpark moves to Wilhelmsruh substation
With the move into the Wilhelmsruh substation at Copenhagener Straße 87 in Berlin, the Inge-German-Kron-Gymnasium can open its doors to students: inside. The school community breaks up because the interim school location was opened in good time at the beginning of the school year and a special naming was celebrated.
The former industrial monument, which was built in 1925-26 by architect Hans Heinrich Müller for the then Bewager, served as a office location after many years of renovation from 2007 to 2009. Now it has been redesigned for school operations, with modern learning and working conditions being created. The large hall character of the building was preserved, while areas such as specialist rooms, an auditorium and a student club were integrated.
The namesake of the high school, Inge Deutschkron, was a Holocaust survivor and a committed journalist who went to democracy, freedom and dignity. The renaming of the school helps to continue their values and educate young people accordingly. This measure was called as an important step for the school community by the Senator for Education, Youth and Family, Katharina Günther-Wünsch.
In order to duly appreciate the historical location and at the same time meet the educational requirements, the former Wilhelmsruh was converted into a modern school building. Despite the initial protests of the school at the European Sport Park against unreasonable conditions at its old location, the opening of the new high school marks a turning point in the history of the educational institution.
