The number of hot days in Berlin has almost tripled in recent decades, which increases the risk of human health. In Neukölln in particular, areas such as Britz and the heavily sealed north of the district are affected by heat load. In response to this, the Neukölln district office presented the first heat protection plan for the district.
District City Councilor Hannes Rehfeldt emphasizes the need to prepare for the changed environmental conditions and increasing environmental hazards. The focus is on particularly endangered groups of people such as pregnant women, children, the elderly and homeless. The heat protection plan comprises a total of 15 measures, including the construction of "cool rooms" in district centers, the distribution of sun hats and sunscreens to homeless people and the creation of information material for affected groups.
The planned measures also include the greening and distortion of courtyards, the new planting of climate-adapted street trees and the equipment of the parking lot on the U-BHF. The results of this year's measures are evaluated after the summer and flow into the heat protection plan for 2025.
In the long term, further measures are planned that require both financial and personnel resources.
