The importance of the Mutmach tour: Hope for children with cancer in Berlin

The annual Mustmach tour of the German Children's Cancer Foundation is an impressive example of cohesion and support in the community. This initiative, at the former cancer patient: cycling through the country to spread courage and hope, once again visited the Helios Klinikum Berlin-Buch this year.

From August 17th to 24th, 2024, around 50 drivers: inside from all over Germany covered a distance of about 700 km. The group consisted of young adults who had suffered cancer themselves in the past and successfully fought against the disease. Her message to the current patient: "Your stories do not have to end differently than ours."

Regeneration and return to a normal lifestyle after a serious illness is a key topic of this tour. Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Patrick Hundsdörfer, chief physician of pediatric and adolescent medicine at the Helios Clinic, accompanied the drivers: "The importance of this project:" The stories of these young people are inspiring. They give the sick children hope and demonstrate that it is possible to survive difficult times. "

The Helios Klinikum Berlin-Buch is a modern hospital that is characterized by high medical standards and treats over 55,000 inpatient and 144,000 outpatient patients every year. It houses special centers, such as children's oncology that benefit in the long term through such visits to initiatives as the Mutmach tour. These visits not only strengthen cohesion in the community, but also promote awareness of the challenges with which children are confronted with cancer.

The 19-year-old participant Sarah, who suffered from acute lymphatic leukemia in childhood, described her visit to children's oncology as "a gift of gratitude". Your goal is to give hope to other people affected: "I would like to show that a life full of possibilities is waiting after the disease.".

An important element of the tour is also a conversation with the little patients: inside and their parents. During these encounters, courts and bracelets are distributed, which not only serve as memorabilia, but also convey the message: "I will never do one thing: give up!". This little gesture is of great importance and strengthens the fighting spirit of those affected.

The repetition of this tour, which has been carried out for 32 years, shows how important it is that young survivors share their stories and use their experiences to encourage others. The Mutmacht tour is much more than just a bike tour; It is a symbol of hope and support in difficult times.

We are looking forward to the next few years of this initiative, in the hope that many other children and adolescents can benefit from this positive message.
