The Mapquilt Tree wins art on the construction competition

The district mayor of Mitte, Stefanie Remlinger, and the district councilor for school and sports, Benjamin Fritz, have announced that art was completed in the construction competition for the construction of a elementary school at Reinickendorfer Straße 60 in Berlin. After intensive discussion and under the direction of the artist Renate Wolff, the jury unanimously advocated the draft "The Mapquilt Tree" by the artist Stephanie Imbeau.

The sculpture "The Mapquilt Tree" will represent a stylized tree shape on the school's forecourt. The tree top is based on the concept of a quil and visually reflects the Wedding district by converting streets and paths into stainless steel branches. An integral part of the project is the accompanying story "The Mapquilt Tree", which is to be printed as an illustrated children's book.

The realization of art in construction will be carried out with a budget of 220,000 euros gross. The artist Inken Reinert's competition "of animals and plants" of the artist came to second place, followed by "Wilten!" by Silvana Tiller-Tapanova in third place.

The artist Stephanie Imbeau comes from Canada and has lived in Berlin since 2016. She has a master in visual arts from Newcastle University and a Bachelor in Fine Art from Ohio State University. In her artistic practice, she examines the way people make connections between themselves and others.

The competition was advertised as a two -phase, open -minded and anonymous realization competition. Ten were selected from the originally submitted 62 articles for further elaboration.

The new elementary school at Reinickendorfer Straße 60 in Berlin will include a four-day primary school, a sports hall with six indoor parts and two spectator galleries as well as a play and tool shed in a modular design. The construction work is carried out as part of Berlin's school building offensive II. The school community of the Anna-Lindh School will move into the new building.
