Colonial traces in Marzahn-Hellersdorf: Exhibition in the district museum from December 2023. Discover the German colonial history in our district!
according to a report by www.berlin.de As a Berlin citizen, I welcome the initiative of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district museum, which presented an inventory of places in the district with the exhibition "Colonial Traces in Marzahn-Hellersdorf", which are connected to German colonial history. In the 20th century, Marzahn-Hellersdorf was not free of colonial influences. Despite the rather rural structure of the space at the time, there was an import of ivory and the trade in colonial goods such as coffee, cocoa and spices. The Reichskolonialbund also organized events from 1933 in which it reclaimed the German colonies named after the First World War.
The exhibition is an important opportunity to reflect on the local effects of German colonialism and to promote a critical examination of German colonial history. The recognition and processing of the German crimes in the colonies are still at the beginning and events such as this help to sharpen awareness.
The exhibition will be shown in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district museum, Haus 2, Alt-Marzahn 55, 12685 Berlin, from December 3, 2023. The opening times are from Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on the first Sunday of the month from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. I encourage all Berliners, especially the residents of Marzahn-Hellersdorf, to visit the exhibition and to actively deal with the local colonial past.
