New Democracy report reveals challenges and opportunities for citizen participation in Marzahn-Hellersdorf

The year 2023 was characterized by a wide range of challenges at the district and global level. In this context, the sixth democracy report was published, which offers important insights into the democratic situation in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district.

The first part of the report analyzes the phenomena in the district, which is dangerous to democracy, by examining the number of cases for 2023. At the same time, the partnerships for Democracy Marzahn and Hellersdorf as well as the district integration office present their activities to strengthen democratic culture and to support people with escape experiences.

A central focus of the report is on the subject of citizen participation. In view of a growing distance to democracy, it is crucial to shed light on the various participation options at the district level. Although there are theoretically there are many opportunities for citizens, many of them are not known or associated with excessive hurdles. The Democracy report therefore presents selected examples from the area of ​​citizen participation and leads interviews with experts from various areas of the district.

In the final part of the report, conclusions from the interviews on the subject of citizen participation are drawn. Concrete ideas of action and suggestions are derived how the opportunities for participation for the citizens in Marzahn-Hellersdorf can be improved. The coordination office for democracy development invites politics, administration and civil society to the discussion and cooperation in order to jointly advance democratic participation in the district.
