On April 8, 2024, the first international Roma congress marks the 53rd annual. On this occasion, the Roma flag is raised in front of the Lichtenberg town hall in Berlin. This anniversary has developed into a global day of action on which the situation of the Roma is drawn to, in particular its discrimination and persecution. The Roma Day is reminiscent of the Congress of April 8, 1971 in London, in which the International Association of Roma was founded to promote social justice and equality.

The flag ranging in front of the Lichtenberg town hall is initiated by district mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU). He emphasizes the importance of the action as a statement for respect and equality. This is intended to set a sign against exclusion and discrimination. Sinti and Roma have been living in Germany for centuries and were always suspended racist agitation and persecution. Even today they are faced with prejudices and many live under difficult living conditions.

In the district of Lichtenberg there is also a community of Roma. The district administration specifically supports them with advisory and educational offers. It is important to appreciate the culture and history of the Roma and fight against prejudices. Further information on the International Roma Day can be found on corresponding sources of information.

The following table shows some facts about the situation of the Roma in Germany:

| Factor | Information |
| ————————————————————————- | | Number of Roma in Germany | It is estimated that around 70,000 to 120,000 Roma live in Germany. |
| Discrimination | Roma are still exposed to discrimination and prejudices in many European countries. |
| Story | During the Holocaust, hundreds of thousands of Roma were victims of the genocide. |

The International Roma Day is an opportunity to draw attention to the rights and dignity of this minority and to stand up for more tolerance and equality.
