New kindergarten in Lichtenberg: 185 places for our little ones!

Gudrunstraße 14, 10365 Berlin, Deutschland - On June 13, 2025, a new kindergarten at Gudrunstraße 14 was opened in Berlin. State Secretary Stephan Machulik, deputy district mayor Camilla Schuler and other representatives from the education system were present. This opening marks a significant progress in the expansion of childcare in the Lichtenberg district.

The new kindergarten offers space for a total of 185 children and has been built on an undeveloped triangle plot between Gudrunstraße, Kriemhild- and Rüdigerstraße. The construction project was financed through the urban development program sustainable renewal and additional investment means. The total costs amount to around 10.7 million euros, with 8.9 million euros being provided by the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Living.

innovative educational concepts and design

The new building of the kindergarten, which has an area of 1,370 square meters, is kept in two-story. This appealing architecture, which is the result of a competition from 2019, comes from the architects Ludloff Ludloff and GM013 landscape architecture. Particularly noteworthy are the flexibly usable group and multifunctional rooms, which with 870 square meters take most of the area. There are also 100 square meters available for administrative and parent consulting areas.

The pedagogical concept places a special focus on democracy formation and innovative approaches in early childhood education. The spacious garden is also designed to offer a natural learning experience, as it is designed together by the children and the pedagogical staff. The play areas include two climbing systems and a meadow area for movement activities.

nationwide initiatives for day care for childcare

The new kindergarten in Lichtenberg is part of a more comprehensive training and educational policy framework. The federal government has undertaken to support the federal states in expanding the offers for childcare. The Federal Government pursues the goal of offering all children good educational and participation opportunities and to enable parents to reconcile family and work. The financing of childcare is the responsibility of the states and municipalities.

Since 2008, the Federal Government has initiated five investment programs to finance childcare, which include a total of 5.4 billion euros. In addition, over 750,000 additional care places for children were created until school starts. The currently valid 5th investment program provides one billion euros for the expansion of 90,000 care places. This program is based on the economic stimulus package for coping with the Corona pandemic and is partially financed by the EU.

The care rate of under three year olds increased from 17.6% in 2008 to 36.4% in 2023. Nevertheless, there are regional differences, since the number of children in the East German countries are declining, while in West German federal states there is a high need for expansion. The federal government also supports the federal states with the daycare quality law and an overall strategy that focuses on skilled workers in daycare centers. By the end of 2027, 3.5 billion euros are available for the development of childcare places for primary school children.

Politics has made significant progress in the expansion and improvement of the quality of the offers since the introduction of the legal entitlement to funding in daycare facilities in 2013. The Child Promotion Act, which came into force on December 16, 2008, plays a central role in this because it promotes high -quality educational offers for children under three years of age and also appreciates childcare.

With the opening of the new kindergarten in Lichtenberg, another step towards better day care and early childhood education is taken in Berlin.

berlin.de reported that in May 2025 with a first group, which underlines the willingness of the city to drive the expansion of care facilities forward.
