On 7. and September 8, 2024 , the district of Lichtenberg opens its doors to historical sites and invites all Berliners to the nationwide day of the open monument. Under the guiding principle of "contemporary witnesses in history", citizens can immerse themselves in the exciting past of the district. Instead of going to a museum, there is an opportunity to experience lively history in 14 different locations.

The highlights include important places such as the former Stasi headquarters on the campus for democracy, which is considered a memory of the GDR history, and the city center cemetery Friedrichsfelde, on which many remarkable personalities rest. The church is particularly impressive to the happy message in Karlshorst with its famous Amalien organ, which offers musical contemporary witnesses. These sites provide insights into the past and testify to the cultural and political history of Berlin.

Camilla Schuler, the district councilor for urban development, emphasizes the importance of monument protection: "Authentic places of remembrance can be preserved through monument protection and history can be experienced." She not only sees the day of the open monument as a way to discover Lichtenberg's diversity, but also as an opportunity to raise awareness of the value of this historic places.

The event is not only aimed at adults. A special children's program is offered at two of the selected locations, which brings younger visitors: the story brings the story closer. In addition, many of the places are accessible in barriers, which means that people with restrictions also have the opportunity to experience history up close.

Further information, the full program and an interactive map that the locations indicated, are available on the website of the State Monument Office in Berlin. The event is not only a celebration of the cultural heritage, but also a request to the community to actively deal with your own history and to preserve it for future generations.
