According to Christian Bräuer, the CEO of the Yorck cinema group, the reasons for closing technical nature are. The cinema is to be fundamentally renovated, including the update of house and building technology, the overhaul of the interior and the use of adjoining rooms. The cost of the renovation is estimated at around 13 to 15 million euros. It is a monument -friendly renovation in which each distant part has to be used in the end. The goal is to let the film palace from 1963 designed by architect Josef Kaiser to shine again in 1963. The cinema international is considered an institution due to its architecture and history.
There are no major changes in the cinema during the closure. Both the armchairs in the large hall as well as the wooden panels on the walls and the panoramic bar with a view of the Karl-Marx-Allee should remain unchanged. The cinema is under monument protection, so the original equipment features must be preserved.
The closure of the cinema leaves a gap in the neighborhood and the cultural scene. Nevertheless, film fans can look forward to the upcoming 60th anniversary of the cinema and numerous film starts. The "Mongay" films in the "Babylon Kreuzberg" are shown for the time of closure.
