Young people with a migration background and escape experience take part in free swimming courses
In Berlin, free swimming courses for young people with a migration background or escape experience are offered. Many of these young people have never had swimming lessons, as this was not common or possible in their home countries. The State Sports Association Berlin organizes one-week swimming intensive courses, which are designed especially for children who are not yet safe swimmers. Usually the range of primary school children who do not yet have a bronze badge after swimming lessons in third grade.
This summer, however, the holiday courses have now also been extended to grades seven to ten. These older children now have separate courses in three indoor pools in order not to have to swim with the primary school children. The demand has risen sharply in this age group and all 330 places have already been booked.
A goal of the courses is to reduce fears. This is achieved through the care of the young people by trained swimming trainers who can take a lot of time for every student. Many of the young people had never had experience in deep water before or had negative experiences with it. It is therefore not surprising that many children are unable to maintain the bronze badge if swimming lessons in schools are not sufficient. After the last school year, 36 percent of third graders were no safe swimmers. This is an alarming number compared to the previous surveys.
The deterioration of the children's floating skills can be attributed primarily to Corona pandemic, since swimming lessons have failed in many schools. In order to take the fear of the water to the young people, they are gently used to the water in the courses. In addition to sporting performance, the participants of the swimming course also have to know the bathing rules. The intensive courses offer close support from qualified swimming trainers, in contrast to school lessons, which is often only carried out by one or two teachers for a whole class of around 25 children.
The lack of individual care and the use of teachers without sufficient qualifications for swimming lessons means that many children do not create the bronze badge even after the end of the pandemic. Swimming lessons at schools with fewer resources are particularly affected. Free swimming courses from the Landesportbund Berlin are offered by seven swimming and sports clubs and the Berlin swimming association in indoor pools. The offer is aimed at primary school children of the third to sixth grade and pupils of upper secondary level (seventh to tenth grade) who have no bronze badge yet.
The non -swimmer quota is highest in the districts of Spandau, Mitte and Neukölln. These districts also have the highest social and health burdens. Many parents are grateful for the free swimming courses because they offer their children the opportunity to learn to swim. At the end of the courses, the participants receive a certificate and many also receive the swimming badge, which makes them proud.
