Infrastructure in danger: the collapse of the Carol Bridge in Dresden

bridge collapse in Dresden: A wake -up call for the infrastructure

In the early Wednesday morning, a serious incident occurred in Dresden when a section of the historic carol bridge, which was about 100 meters long, plunged into the Elbe. This bridge, which has been in the renovation process since 2019, is now a unfortunate symbol for the state of the German infrastructure.

Fortunately, there was no injuries in this incident, which appears to many as a small ray of hope in the middle of this tragedy. Wolfgang Schubert-Raab, the President of the Central Association of German Construction, expressed his concern about the collapse and referred to initial indications that corrosion is examined a possible cause. Corrosion is the process in which material, especially metal, is damaged by chemical reactions, which leads to its weakening.

The Carol Bridge was identified as an example for many other bridges in Germany, which were built between 1960 and 1985 and are now getting very old. In the western federal states, a considerable part of this infrastructure faces similar challenges. Schubert-Raab emphasizes the urgency of state initiatives and investments to ensure the security and sustainability of the bridge network.

He calls on politics to take the maintenance of the infrastructure seriously, since it is not just about avoiding accidents. The functionality of the transport infrastructure is crucial for the entire society and the economy. "We need a long-term investment plan of at least 10 to 20 years," said Schubert-Raab. This would not only enable the necessary structure of personnel and devices, but also promote a proactive approach to maintain and renew our infrastructure.

The tragedy of falling bridge in Dresden is not only an isolated event, but also throws a light on a widespread problem that now needs urgent attention. The maintenance and modernization of outdated buildings must be a top priority to ensure the security of citizens and maintain the flow of traffic in Germany.
