HONERSNOT worldwide: progress and women are particularly affected

The world is on the edge of a famine! The brand new World Hunger Index 2024 reveals terrifying truths: the worldwide fight against hunger is stagnating!

At a time when one should hope for progress, shocking 733 million people on this planet are still affected by hunger - a number that captivates us all. The report reveals the nutritional situation in 136 countries and presents alarming trends: Hunger has increased in 22 countries since 2016, while in 20 other countries the progress has almost come to a standstill. The situation in Africa south of the Sahara and South Asia are particularly worrying, where the hunger rates remain at an unbearable level.

The blatant relationships

The insidious? Crises overlap each other and strengthen each other - armed conflicts, the devastating effects of climate change and the oppressive debt of the poorest nations present themselves as a devastating trio of misery. "It is unacceptable that the global community does not adequately fulfill its commitment to end hunger," explains Marlehn Thieme, President of Welthungerhilfe. Your words are an urgent call to the action: the global crises have fatal consequences for the nutritional situation of families and strain their resilience to constantly resist new shocks.

This year's report gives deep insights into the oppressive relationships between gender justice, nutritional uncertainty and climate impacts. Women and girls are the main suffering of these unjust conditions - the effects of hunger and climatic changes affect them disproportionately.

Mathias Mogge, CEO of Welthungerhilfe, is demanding loudly: "Gender equity is a crucial lever to permanently eliminate hunger!" The struggle for equality must be at the forefront - governments must finally invest in health, education and rural development in order to reduce the deeply rooted inequalities and to give women better access to resources and decision -making processes.

The urgency of this situation cannot be denied! Welthungerhilfe, one of the largest and most independent aid organizations in Germany, bravely has been working on solutions and has supported an incredible 12,128 projects in 72 countries with over 5 billion euros since its foundation in 1962. Your goal? A world without hunger!
