Hertha BSC has decided to actively work in women's and girls' football. A decision by the general meeting of November 13, 2022 laid the foundation stone, and since the 2023/24 season, a women's team has been active for the club in the game. The team had already recorded success in the previous year, including the runner -up championship in the Regionalliga Nordost. This was, among other things, through a partnership with the F.C. Hertha 03 Zehlendorf, which serves as the basis for the development of the women's and girls department.
Successes and challenges
The Hertha BSC women's football department recently took part in the DFB Cup, where they were allowed to compete against Wolfsburg in front of over 3,000 spectators. Such events underline the growing popularity of women's football in Germany. According to a report by the German Football Association (DFB), an audience of 360 million people for the women's national team and 267 million for the Bundesliga was reached for the 2021/2022 season. The DFB's goal is to increase the reach of women's football by 100 % by 2027.
In the new 2025/26 season, the department is entering an exciting phase. All grassroots sports teams become F.C. Hertha 03 Zehlendorf transferred in order to promote youth work even more specifically. In addition, the U20 squad will continue to be built up in the regional league, while the U17 squad will play in the newly founded regional league. The U15 and U13 teams are active in the corresponding leagues, so the focus is on sustainable talent development.
Another step towards increasing the visibility of female players is through the extensive use of digital channels. The DFB plans to expand content specifically for social media and increase interest in women's football by developing a digital platform. Such measures help to raise the profile of the players and the competitions, for example through documentaries and also through the establishment of partnerships with international media.
