Court tilted prohibition: Compact remains at the pulse of freedom of the press!

Berlin, Deutschland - On June 10, 2025, the Federal Administrative Court temporarily suspended the prohibition of the right -wing extremist magazine "Compact". In the urgent procedure, the court accepted a lawsuit and an urgent application from the editorial team that was raised against the ban by Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser. This imposed the ban on July 16, 2024 on the basis of the Association Act, since it described "Compact" as a central mouthpiece of the right -wing extremist scene. However, the judges expressed doubts about the proportionality of the ban and emphasized the importance of freedom of the press, which led to the current stage victory for the magazine.

The court decided that “Compact” can continue to appear for the time being, while the main proceedings are still pending. As a precaution, two more days of negotiations were scheduled, which will take place on Wednesday and Thursday. It remains unclear whether the judges will react to the hearing with a judgment or set another date. Editor -in -chief Jürgen Elsässer showed himself optimistic and announced that it quickly resumed the work of the magazine.

reactions to the ban

The decision of the court also found political echo. The AfD welcomed the suspension of the ban and understood it as a sign of support for freedom of the press. On the other hand, the Federal Ministry of the Interior remains in its legal opinion and plans to further explain it in the main proceedings. The German Journalist Association (DJV) praised the court's decision as a clear commitment to freedom of the press and underlined the challenges caused by the original ban.

In the course of the ban, searches were carried out in several federal states in which evidence were confiscated. These confiscated items must be published within a week, but may continue to be evaluated. The court had temporarily suspended the ban on August 14, 2024 in the urgent procedure, since numerous indications for a violation of human dignity were found in the publications.

The current situation around "Compact" clearly shows the tensions between the preservation of press freedom and the fight against right -wing extremists in Germany. The upcoming trial days will be crucial for the legal assessment of the situation and the potential effects on the spread of information.
