Progress in residents' parking: Cities react to SUV flood
It's time for rethinking in Germany's cities! The German Environmental Aid (DUH) strikes back against the SUV flood that is overwhelming our streets. The organization submitted applications in 324 cities to take effective measures against the increasing motor vehicles. And the results are not long in coming: In Koblenz, the parking fees are already being staggered according to vehicle size!
Aachen and Cologne follow up, while Cologne also incorporates the size of the vehicles into the calculation of the parking fees from 2025. This is a crucial progress in the fight against the too big cars that put a strain on our urban space. However, the DUH goes one step further: it demands an increase in fines for false parking in order to finally bring drivers to reason.
The big discussion about SUV fees
The applications have sparked a nationwide debate. Cities such as Bielefeld, Heilbronn and Kassel are now also checking whether they can adapt the residential park fees according to vehicle size. Another positive example is the Thuringian state capital Erfurt, where only residential parking cards for vehicles up to 5.2 meters are issued. That means: motorhomes have to stay outside!
And that's not all! In Munich and Nuremberg, staggered parking fees are also considered, but there are still limiting laws in Bavaria and some other federal states that limit fees to EUR 30.70 per year. In contrast, Bonn has already increased the fees to an incredible 360 euros, which corresponds to the minimum claims of the DUH. Here it becomes clear that the pressure on those responsible is growing!
fines on the test bench
But the wound dot remains: The fines for false parking are really a joke in Germany! While fines up to 120 euros are due across Europe, the punishments in this country are ridiculously low. This has to change, the DUH is vehemently demanding and is committed to revising the catalog of fines!
and the greatest annoyance? Digital Minister Wissing blocks the introduction of digital parking space monitoring by modern scan-cars. This has long been a reality in other countries! Such technologies could not only consistently pursue violations, but also significantly relieve the overloaded regulatory offices, demands Jürgen Resch, the federal manager of Duh.
Background is the alarming condition: In January 2024, the number of cars in Germany will achieve a new record value with 49.1 million. SUVs and off -road vehicles in particular are on the rise and now make up 40 percent of new registrations! The DUH therefore says: end with the monsters on the streets!
