Last weekend, an unfortunate incident occurred in a club of lesbian women who came to the arson attack. The authorities assume a possible homophobic background and have switched on state protection to advance the investigation.
The attack took place on the night of Sunday when the club's building was badly damaged by the fire. Fortunately, there were no people in the building at this point, so that nobody was injured. Nevertheless, the incident is alarming and again shows the increasing violence against queer people.
The rainbow flag, the symbol of the LGBTQ+community, is on the ground in front of the destroyed building. This picture illustrates the destruction and hatred with which the queer community is confronted.
Unfortunately,homophobic attacks have been increasing continuously in recent years. The recognition and visibility of LGBTQ+people did not lead to better acceptance in society, but has to be intensified for some people. It can be seen sad that this negative attitude results in violent acts such as this arson attack.
The Federal Government has already reacted and condemns the incident to the sharpest. Politicians of all parties call to combat any form of discrimination and violence and to work for a tolerant and respectful society.
It is important that such acts are not only convicted, but that they also have consequences. The authorities have to do everything possible to determine and bring the perpetrators to court. This is the only way to make a clear sign against hate and intolerance.
The arson attack on the association of lesbian women is an attack on the entire queer community. It is an attack on freedom, diversity and self -determination of every single person, regardless of his sexuality or identity.
In times when more and more countries are making progress in relation to the rights of the LGBTQ+community, Germany must not lag behind. It is time to consistently oppose homophobia and discrimination and to stand up for a society in which all people are accepted and respected equally.
The incident in the association of lesbian women has once again illustrated the urgency of this demand. It is up to all of us to work for equality and tolerance and not to accept such attacks. Only by going against homophobia together can we create a fairer and safer future for queer people.
