Fair remuneration for radio play authors: progress for art

A bang for the radio play scene! ARD and Deutschlandradio have dared a historical step with a new remuneration system for authors. This deal could secure the future of the radio play sustainably and brings a breath of fresh air to the traditional art form!

At a time when digital content enjoys booming popularity, it was becoming increasingly difficult for the creative to preserve a fair remuneration for their work. But now, with the new joint remuneration rule for radio play manuscripts (GVR radio play), the whole thing is being revolutionized! Clear guidelines that apply to all ARD institutions, and for the first time in the event of high first remuneration, put an end to injustice. The regulation is the answer to the digital change and covers a wide range of uses!

agreement ensures the creative future

Peter Wiechmann, who is considered the negotiator of the broadcasting centers, is enthusiastic: "We have developed a future -oriented remuneration system in constructive conversations!" The decoupling of the program from online use is another plus that now offers the authors the security they earn.

Also Oliver Sturm from the Association of Theater Authors is convinced of the change: "It was important to us that the initial remuneration acts as a kind of advance on future uses. This is how we not only create a remuneration, but also contribute to the preservation of the radio play!"

The demand for justice

The new regulations are the result of a deep reputation for justice that sounded in June 2021. At that time, the radio play authors turned to the broadcasters in an open letter and called for a modern remuneration model. The reverberation was impressive: the negotiations that were then started finally ended in May 2024. This regulation comes into force with effect from September 1, 2024 - in retrospect a date that goes into history!

"We are pleased that we have established a modern remuneration system with the GVR radio play and the application agreement for publishing licenses," says Sylvia Schmidt, the managing director of the association of the German stage and media publishers. It's a step in the right direction for the creative community!

The future of the radio play looks radiant! Thanks to the joint efforts of everyone involved, a golden path is paved for authors - one who ensures that their art is also long -lasting and fairly rewarded in the digital age.
