Good news for documentary film fans in the southwest: The Südwestrundfunk (SWR) has appointed a new head of the document for documentary formats. From February 1, 2024, Esther Saoub will take over the management of the department and thus follow Eric Friedler. Clemens Bratzler, responsible SWR program director, expressed very positive about the new occupation and emphasized the importance of documentaries for the SWR.

Esther Saoub is no stranger to the media landscape. Born in Stuttgart, she studied literary studies, Islamic studies and Judaistics in Berlin and Damascus and volunteered at SWR. Afterwards she worked as a moderator and reporter on radio before heading the ARD radio studio in Cairo from 2006 to 2011 and reporting from the Middle East and North Africa. She was nominated for the German Radio Prize for her work.

Since 2012, Saoub has been working as a reporter and editor of Langer Formats for various public service broadcasters and was also involved in the development of the "World Sign" Podcast. Most recently, she headed the religion and world department in the SWR and was responsible for reports and documentation on the topics of religion, migration and society.

The DIFITION DIE DOCU of the SWR has already implemented a variety of productions and co-productions this year. Documentary films are an indispensable format, especially at a time when complex facts are often simplified. Saoub emphasized that it is particularly important in such times to present nuanced and differentiated perspectives through documentaries.

With this line -up, the SWR relies on an experienced journalist and media manager who has already been awarded many times. Saoub brings a broad expertise in various journalistic formats and will continue the successful work of Eric Friedler. So we look forward to exciting, investigative and multi -layered documentaries from the southwest.

Overall, the upcoming management of Esther Saoub promises an exciting and qualitative development of the documentary format in the SWR. We can look forward to your future projects and the variety that will bring you into the genre.
