Defineration in Graefekiez: A contribution to climate adjustment and traffic relief

in the Graefekiez in Berlin-Kreuzberg is one of the city's largest distasions measures. In doing so, car parking spaces are replaced by unsealed soil. A total of around 37 parking spaces are to be sealed, which corresponds to an area of around 540 square meters. In addition to the Lausitzer Platz and the Görlitz bank, the Graefekiez is one of the pilot areas for such a deficiency projects.

The main purpose of the drawing is to prepare Berlin for climate change. Due to the increasing global warming and climate change, the soil dries out increasingly and there are increasingly heavy rain cases. The deflection enables better seepage of rainwater and prevents flooding. In addition, the increased proportion of infiltrating soil is directed less rainwater into the sewage system, which reduces overflowing and the pollution of water.

The distasions not only serve to adapt to the climate, but is also part of a comprehensive traffic project. Under the motto "gradually more space", the district office Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg works together with the Berlin Science Center and other partners on the redesign of the streets in Graefekiez. The focus is on traffic safety, commercial improvement and the expansion of shared mobility offers.

It was originally planned to allow almost no private car parking spaces throughout the residential area. However, due to legal provisions, the project had to be significantly slimmed down. Instead of 2200 car parking spaces, only 400 will now be omitted. The open areas are to be converted into green areas, seating areas, loading zones and sharing stations.

However, the implementation of the project is delayed, although it has become significantly smaller. For example, several jelbi stations should be set up in April where e-scooters, bicycles and other sharing vehicles can be rented out. However, the permits for the areas are not yet available and the opening is expected to take place until the fourth quarter of 2023.

The establishment of loading and delivery zones is also difficult. It was originally planned to set it up in June and July 2023. But due to limited personnel capacities in the road and green space office as well as ongoing accompanying research and participation, there is still no specific schedule.

Despite the delays, the Graefekiez project already recorded initial success. For example, around 400 citizens have accepted the offer to rent parking space in the parking garage of the Galeria Kaufhof on Hermannplatz in Neukölln for 50 euros per month. This free space in the residential area and the paths to the car are extended, which promotes the use of alternative means of transportation.

Overall, the motorization rate in Graefekiez is significantly lower than in all of Berlin. With almost 180 cars to 1000 inhabitants, it is less than half as high. Nevertheless, there is also criticism of the project. Some residents reject the experiment and the CDU criticizes the district office for continuing to strive for a car park -free zone throughout the Graefekiez. The exact future of the newly created green areas and their care also remains to be seen. The district office already has difficulty maintaining parks and keeping them clean. However, around 50 citizens have already registered who want to take care of the maintenance of the cleared areas.
