The importance of allotment culture for environmental education
The exhibition "City I Natur I Mensch", which was opened on September 3, 2024 in the Berlin Federal Center of the Federal Association of the Allotment Garden Associations (BKD), shows how small gardens are not only retreats, but also important actors in climate and nature conservation. The interactive presentation aims to bring pupils from the 5th grade closer to the connections between nature, city and humans and to actively involve them in this process.
The opening of the exhibition took place as part of a broader Initiative to promote environmental awareness. It is examined how urban gardens can contribute to biodiversity and sustainability in cities. The experiences on site convey the participants what significant role in combating climate change can play by offering habitats for a variety of plants and animals. These aspects are made tangible through practical activities and interactive stations.
- Interactive experiences: Visitors can learn in different ways, for example by feeling the temperature in a compost heap or listening to the sounds of ground animals.
- pedagogical programs: Accompanying the exhibition offers the BKD events that address specific topics such as the plant cycle or environmental justice. These programs are an excellent addition to school lessons.
- Green classroom: From spring 2025, the “green classroom” will open in cooperation with the German allotment youth, where students can learn practical gardeners.
With this exhibition, another step is taken to sensitize younger generations to ecological topics. Through playful learning as part of the exhibition, the students have the opportunity to learn practical skills and to develop awareness of ecological relationships.
The opening times of the exhibition are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and school classes can also visit the premises after prior registration. The participation fee of € 1.50 per person offers affordable access to visual offers.
This interactive project gains the allotment movement into importance by not only conveying the horticultural skills, but also serving as a platform for natural education and environmental protection. Further information about the offer can be found on the website Stadt-natur-mensch.de .
