E-scooter in Berlin: Will the capital prohibit the controversial trend?

E-scooter in Berlin: Will the capital prohibit the controversial trend?

e-scooter are controversial: while they are a quick means of transportation for tourists in Berlin, they are a nuisance for many locals. The metropolis Paris banned the scooters from their streets in April and in Berlin there are always problems with the electric scooters. As a result, a current survey could be brought in to obtain the opinion of the Berliners about the e-scooters.

The advantages of the e-scooters are obvious: they are available on almost every street corner, simply log in to the app and enable fast moving at up to 20 km/h. They are also climate -friendly and relatively inexpensive (approx. 30 cents per minute).

However, there are also disadvantages when using the scooters. Numerous accidents and injuries have already been recorded. In addition, there are problems such as a chaotic handling of the scooters on sidewalks, illegal driving on sidewalks and thus endangered pedestrians. The Berliners are already discussing these problems intensively.

In order to obtain information about the opinion of the Berliners, a survey was started. This is carried out by the University of Sustainable Development Eberswalde (HNE) and initiated by the Citizens' Advisory Board Berlin-Tourism. The aim of the advisory board is to make people's opinion visible and to provide recommendations for politics.

Berliners can take part in the survey until July 31 and give their opinion on e-scooters. The questionnaire with 17 questions was carried out by students of the HNE master's program "Sustainable Tourism Management" under the direction of Prof. Dr. Nicole Häusler developed. The results of the survey are to be published in September in order to clarify political decision -makers.

There are similar problems in dealing with e-scooters in other major German cities. Hamburg, Leipzig and Nuremberg have already taken measures to reduce or limit the number of scooters. There are currently two providers of e-scooters in Leipzig, others are currently not being approved. Hamburg has set a fleet size of a maximum of 1000 e-scooters per provider. In Nuremberg, the number of scooters is to be reduced by more than one fifth to 4000 pieces, while the city is planning 270 new parking spaces at the same time. The aim is to bring more order to the transport network. E-scooter stations are also to be expanded in Leipzig, Stuttgart and Frankfurt.

Düsseldorf even has plans to set up a parking zone for cars in the city center and instead to introduce 100 sharing stations for e-scooters. Additional sharing stations are to be built at well-frequented locations and stops of local public transport. At the same time, the number of e-scooters in the city is to be limited to 8400. A general ban on the scooter is not yet planned.

It is interesting to see how different the cities deal with the topic of e-scooters. While some cities reduce the number of scooters and create parking spaces, others even want to expand the infrastructure for e-scooters. It remains to be seen which solutions ultimately prove to be effective in order to solve the problems in dealing with e-scooters. The survey in Berlin is intended to help take into account the opinion of the population and to formulate possible recommendations for action.
