Germany: Climate activists from the Last generation group start nationwide protests with blockages in Berlin, Leipzig and Braunschweig

Germany is again shaken by the climate activists of the “Last Generation” group. The group plans nationwide protests in order to indicate the unequal commitment of the federal government to reduce the climate -damaging greenhouse gas emissions in traffic. A total of 36 seat blocks are planned in 26 German cities.

The actions already started in Berlin, where the activists tried to block the traffic around the victory column. This place is an important hub, especially in rush hour traffic and is used by many commuters. In addition, further promotions were planned near the Hamburg train station as well as on Wilhelmstrasse and Invalidenstrasse in Berlin.

But there were not only protests in Berlin. In Leipzig, activists also blocked federal road 2 and in Dresden some of them stuck on the street. The demonstrators wore masks by well -known German politicians such as Olaf Scholz (SPD), Robert Habeck (Greens) and Volker Wissing (FDP). In Braunschweig they locked a street in the city center, which led to traffic disruptions.

The group "Last generation" has a clear requirement: They require the Federal Government to comply with the applicable climate protection law and to take further measures in order to contain climate change. They accuse the government of breaking laws and leading our society into collapse. The result of the Climate Protection Act for 2022 shows that the legally prescribed amount of greenhouse gases in the traffic and building sector has been exceeded. The deadline for the submission of immediate programs to improve the Situation ends on July 17th.

The climate activists consider their peaceful resistance as a democratic duty and hope that their protests lead to a rethink in politics. They want to make the Federal Government take effective measures to protect the climate and thus ensure the future of the next generations.
