Cottbus' football dream: 500,000 euros for the training zone upgrade!
Cottbus, Deutschland - The city of Cottbus decided on March 26, 2025 in a far-reaching decision to support the third division soccer team Energie Cottbus with around 500,000 euros for the renovation of the dilapidated training ground. Mayor Tobias Schick (SPD) confirmed that the renovation of the square in Parcelstrasse is urgently needed. This financial support is part of a more comprehensive plan to prepare the association for a possible promotion to the second division, where the home stadium is currently considered not second division. In February 2025, the city has already given a promise to clarify the financing together with the country for stadium moderation, which inevitably is connected to the requirements of the DFL (German Football League).
For the modernization of the stadium, costs of around 2.5 million euros are estimated. A defect report by the DFL has transmitted a list of necessary renovations, which includes, among other things, a better floodlight and a roofing of the spectator places. The association cannot raise the financial means for modernization alone. Energie Cottbus plans to contribute around 400,000 euros themselves, but also requires financial aid from the state side, the promise of which could take place according to the current budget consultations in June 2025. This is a critical phase, since the new season in the third division begins on August 1, 2025.
sporting success and political support
Currently Energie Cottbus leads the third division table and has developed into a serious candidate for promotion under coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz. In the last ten league games, the team remained undefeated and has both the second best offensive and defensive in the league. The last appearance in the second division was 11.5 years ago when the club played against Ingolstadt in 2014. It is all the more urgent to meet the infrastructural requirements that are necessary for a possible promotion to the second division.
The support from the state of Brandenburg is of great importance for the association. Political decision -makers show interest in financial aid, but this support is bound to the sporting success of the association. There are views for further political and financial support on the part of the Brandenburg State Chancellery, especially if the results are correct on the square.
financial challenges in football
The problem of financing and the pressure on clubs is not an isolated case in football. Due to the far-reaching financialization and the debates about 50+1 rule, it becomes clear that the economic balance in professional sports is increasingly shifted. In Germany, football is traditionally a club sport in which community and solidarity are in the foreground. However, the influences of financial investors grow, which can not only lead to financial difficulties in clubs, but also endanger the game culture and the fan drag. Among other things, this became clear when planning for the controversial Super League, where financial investors wanted to influence predominantly.
Energie Cottbus faces the challenge of reconciling his sporting and financial goals, while the support from the city and country is crucial for the club in order to continue to work in the threshold for professional football. The results in the league will not only decide on the sporting course, but also about the future financial stability of the association and its infrastructure.
