Roma Day 2024: Berlin honors culture and sets signs against discrimination

Next Monday, April 8, 2024, the 53rd Roma International Day will be celebrated worldwide. This day serves to draw attention to the situation of the Roma, in particular to their discrimination and persecution, and at the same time to appreciate their culture. The Roma Day is reminiscent of the first international Roma congress, which took place on April 8, 1971 in London and aimed to achieve social justice and equality for the Roma. This historical gathering marked a turning point in the self -confidence of the Roma, which was expressed in its own hymn, flag and self -designation Roma.

On the occasion of this day, the Roma flag is raised in Berlin on all town halls in order to set a sign of respect, equality and against exclusion. In the Reinickendorf district, the flag is also raised in front of the town hall, and interested parties are cordially invited to attend the ceremony at 3 p.m. In addition, the Reinickendorf district, in cooperation with the Hildegard Lagrenne Foundation and the Roma self-organization Romatrial e.V. This campaign is to be connected to the flag campaign on the town halls and aims to integrate the topic of the history and presence of the Roma and Sinti in Berlin and Germany in schools.

Schools are encouraged to take the topic around April 8, 2024 in the class or project days in order to promote knowledge of the recognized minority in Germany, to counteract antigentyism and to draw attention to the international Roma Day. For this purpose, schools and teachers are provided with teaching materials and offered online teacher training courses.

Overall, the international Roma Day is an opportunity to celebrate the Roma culture, but at the same time also recognize the challenges with which the Roma community is confronted. Through events such as romaday and educational initiatives such as the Romaday 24 campaign, the visibility and understanding of Roma in society contribute.
