Lack of staff forced Berlin libraries to close from February
The Eberhard Alexander Burgh Library and the Halemweg district library in Berlin must remain temporarily closed for public traffic from February 19, 2024 due to an acute lack of personnel. The city councilor Heike Schmitt-Melz announced this. The closure takes place because there are currently so many places that the operation cannot be maintained. The libraries are expected to open again on September 2, 2024.
For visitors to the Halemweg district library, the Heinrich Schulz library is recommended as an alternative library, while the customers of the Eberhard Alexander Burgh library can use the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer library. The offers for promoting reading in cooperation with daycare centers and schools continue to take place at the locations.
During the closing time, the media of both libraries can be returned free of charge in various locations of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf City Library. Prevention and orders for the libraries are provided at selected locations.
The closure of the libraries is certainly a disappointment for visitors who regularly use the services. The recommendation to switch to other libraries could lead to the number of visitors there temporarily increasing. However, it is important to note that the closure is temporary and that the libraries are expected to be reopened in September.
In order to better understand the effects of these closures, a table with information about the number of visitors and borrowing before loosening can be helpful compared to the other libraries in the area. This could help to better understand the extent of the influence on the local community.
It is important that the city administration progresses as quickly as possible when recruiting qualified staff to ensure the reopening of the libraries in September. In the meantime, visitors can contact the indicated alternative locations to meet their library needs.
