The mixture of film and human rights: Human Rights Film Festival Berlin 2024

From October 4 to 12, 2024, the Human Rights Film Festival takes place in Berlin, which is now considered the most important German Festival for Human Rights Films. Under the motto "Choosing Humanity" there will be a total of 25 impressive documentaries that deal with the basic topics of democracy, human rights and freedom of the press.

The role of Can Dündar is particularly noteworthy as the patron of the festival. The Turkish -speaking journalist and filmmaker is known for his courageous commitment to freedom of the press and human rights. Once editor -in -chief of the respected Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet, Dündar reported on highly explosive topics, including secret military operations. As a result, his life was in danger, and he had to flee into exile after he was sentenced to a long prison sentence in the absence. Once in Berlin, he uses his platform to promote compassion and understanding through films. He commented: "Films can help create empathy and show how important the defense of freedom and democracy is."

Another highlight of the festival is the opening performance of the film democracy noir by Connie Field. This documentary film addresses dangerous developments in Europe, especially in Hungary, where authoritarian tendencies undermine democratic principles. The focus is on three women who courageously face these threats. The film is regarded as a wake -up call that points out that democracy is not a matter of course and must be continuously defended.

Jan Sebastian Friedrich-Rust, one of the co-initiators of the festival, was optimistic about the importance of the event: "In view of global challenges in democracy, it is necessary to present stories and voices that are often not heard. The festival is a platform for dialogue and shows the tireless efforts of those who fight for freedom and justice."

The festival not only offers films, but also an extensive accompanying program that promotes the exchange between NGOs, activists and the film scene. In recent years, numerous prominent human rights activists, including internationally recognized artists and politicians, have taken over the patronage to raise awareness of the importance of human rights.
