Federal government neglects deep geothermal energy - study shows enormous potential of 300 TWH geothermal energy by 2030

An analysis of German environmental aid (DUH) shows that the federal government has a lack of interest in climate -friendly deep geothermal energy. The DUH criticizes the fact that the federal government does not support the promising renewable source of the municipal heat turnaround and gives the municipalities no opportunity to use the high potential of the deep geothermal energy to cover the heat requirement. The DUH demands that the Federal Government's goal will be increased to at least 100 terawatt hours for 2030.

Hydrothermal deep geothermal energy has been established in Germany for decades, but there is no political measures to promote expansion. The DUH makes it clear that the deep geothermal energy has to be promoted with a high priority, and central adjustment screws such as the securing of the finding risk and a nationwide uniformly good access to geological data must be addressed. Financial funding must also be expanded.

A study with the participation of institutes from the Fraunhofer Society and the Helmholtz community showed two years ago that the potential of geothermal energy is far from exhausted. Geothermal energy is a price -stable municipal heat source with great potential that Germany could make more independent of fossil imports. Around 9 billion euros per year would be required for the expansion of deep geothermal energy and the associated heating networks.

to classify: In 2018, the scope of environmentally harmful subsidies in the energy sector was at least 25.4 billion euros according to the Federal Environment Agency.

Background: Geothermal energy is the thermal energy stored in the earth's crust, which is also called geothermal energy. Depth geothermal energy refers to holes of 400 meters deep and more. In the hydrothermal deep geothermal energy, warm or hot depth water is pumped up by holes from the surface and its thermal energy is removed via heat transmitters before the cooled deep water flows back into the same underground layer.

The most important information about deep geothermal energy is summarized in the table below:

| Topic | Information |
| ————— | ——————————— |
| Potential | Germany could generate up to 300 terawatt hours of geothermal energy |
| Goals of the Federal Government for 2030 | The federal government only wants to develop 10 terawatt hours |
| Missing strategy | There is no nationwide geothermal strategy |
| Municipal heat turnaround | Deeper geothermal energy is a promising renewable source for the municipal heat turnaround |
| Long established | Hydrothermal deep geothermal energy has been established in Germany for decades |
| Support of the Federal Government | The Federal Government neglects the potential of deep geothermal energy and holds the municipalities in the rain |
| Duh demands Increasing the Federal Government's expansion goal for 2030 to at least 100 terawatt hours, securing the finding risk, uniform access to geological data and expansion of financial support |
| Study on geothermal energy | A study with the participation of institutes from the Fraunhofer Society and the Helmholtz community showed two years ago that the potential of geothermal energy has not yet been exhausted |
| Scope of environmentally harmful subsidies In 2018, the scope of environmentally harmful subsidies in the energy sector was at least 25.4 billion euros |
