Brandenburg's rental car market in the illegal swamp: authorities raise the alarm!
In the Märkische Metropolis, there is increasing resistance to the illegal practices of rental car companies. More and more counties in Brandenburg report on an increase in banned business practices, which are mainly related to fake documents. In a letter to the Ministry of Transport in Brandenburg, the district council urgently asked for rapid action to combat these grievances. On June 25th there is a conversation between the Ministry of Transport, representatives of Berlin and the counties to discuss possible measures. The framework conditions for rental car companies intensify, in particular due to increasing relocation from Berlin to Brandenburg.
One of the central challenges addressed, is the illegality of many operating companies that try to evade control. The vehicles of these companies are often in Berlin, which increases the problem not only for Brandenburg, but also for the capital itself. The Berlin authorities are emphasized against rental car companies that do not meet their legal requirements. In 2024, numerous vehicles that were conveyed through travel service platforms were blocked. This was due to the lack of valid permits, not covered vehicles and incorrect operating seats.
complaints and control
As part of a comprehensive review, which was carried out on April 1, 2024 by the State Office for Citizens' and Ordinary Matters (Labo), it turned out that around 24.12 percent of the vehicle data sets checked by 8940 were objected to. This means that around a quarter of these vehicles were traveling without valid approval or with expired or revoked licenses. In addition, 182 vehicle data sets were not finally checked due to unplausibility. The complaints and companies are to be blocked by the relevant placement services by April 25 at the latest.
The Labo has announced that the data collected continues to evaluate and work with the police to check illegal practices in the rental car area. A comprehensive working group under the leadership of the Senate Department for Mobility has been set up to improve the exchange of information between the authorities involved.
growth in the industry
With all the challenges that the illegal structures in the rental car area have, the number of newly licensed vehicles in Brandenburg has increased. According to current reports, the inquiries for taxi -like businesses in the counties have increased significantly, which alerts the district council. The uncertainty increases because the new registrations may also be illegal companies. A district alone recorded eleven applications for the approval of around 300 vehicles, another district has increasing number of applications of up to 85 vehicles. In view of the dramatic situation, the counties from the state government finally call for measures to combat illegal structures in the rental car area. Tino Schopf, a traffic politician from the SPD in Berlin, underlines the urgency of these demands and warns of a system of exploitation and fraud that has to be stopped. The district council also proposes to build a common database in order to record companies and individuals with withdrawn concession law and to make an overview of the authorities.
