Brandenburg plans new deportation stations for 2028 - what is behind it?

In 2028, a new detention center will go into operation in Brandenburg. This information comes from an answer to a small request from the CDU interior expert Rainer Genilke. The Tagesspiegel first referred to the plans to complete the location search by 2026. The construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in 2027, although no information about the expected costs has so far.

The decision to establish this new institution follows the closure of an earlier facility in Eisenhüttenstadt in 2017 due to security defects. Brandenburg has been working closely with other federal states for years that have deportation institutions. For example, places in institutions in Büren (North Rhine-Westphalia), Dresden (Free State of Saxony), Ingelheim (Rhineland-Palatinate) and Stadthagen (Lower Saxony) are currently being used. In the years 2023 and 2024, a total of 15 people were accommodated there, while Genilke again pointed out to an estimated 4,000 people who are subject to departure in Brandenburg.

political debate in the Brandenburg state parliament

Inner State Secretary Markus Grünewald emphasized that the residence law provides for a security custody only as an ultima ratio. In addition, he made it clear that the expansion of the task force powers would not cause faster deportations, since foreigners who are obliged to travel out only made a small share of the people to be brought. At the same time, Grünewald reported an increase in illegal immigration to Brandenburg.

Current figures on deportation practice

deportations represent a central topic in German asylum policy. In 2024, a total of 20,084 people were deported from Germany. Compared to previous years, the statistics look as follows: in 2023 16,430, 2022 - 12,945 and 2021 - 11,982 people were deported. The countries of origin of the deported are primarily Georgia, Turkey, Afghanistan, Northern Macedonia, as well as Syrian and Iraqi nationals.

In addition, there was also a significant proportion of minors in the deported: in 2024 there were 3,687, the year before 2,863. The vast majority of the deportations came from the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. In order to enforce the obligation to leave, the deportations are carried out in cooperation with the state police and the federal police.

The provisions for returns are clearly defined. A deportation takes place if people with a rejected asylum application have to leave Germany within a specified period. If non -compliance, the deportation takes place, provided there are no obstacles or tolerations. These regulations show the complex situation of migration and integration in Germany and the challenges for the asylum system.
