Blocked bus tracks: BVG checks the use of cameras against false parkers

blocked bus traces are a problem in many cities, including in Berlin. In order to counteract this, cameras are now to be used in Wiesbaden to document false parkers on bus traces. The Berlin Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) also examine the use of such technology.

The BVG basically considers the monitoring of bus traces by cameras to be a good solution to improve traffic for your buses. Since the beginning of 2013, there has been the possibility to record false parkers on bus traces or stops. More than 9,000 violations were found last year. The fines for parking on bus traces are currently 55 euros.

The technology works in such a way that the cameras are attached to the buses or stops and automatically absorb when a vehicle blocks the bus lane or stop. The images are then viewed by employees of the transport companies that document the violations and impose the corresponding fines.

However, there are also technical challenges in implementing such a project in Berlin. Since the BVG has more than 2,600 stops, 2,600 cameras would have to be installed. In addition, it must be clarified how the recordings are evaluated and how the violations should be punished.

The BVG emphasizes that the security and punctuality of your buses have a top priority for you. The company therefore checks all options to ensure improved accessibility of the bus traces. The introduction of cameras to monitor bus traces is an option that is also discussed in Berlin.

If the project is implemented, around 261 bus traces would have to be equipped with cameras. It would have to be clarified exactly which data is recorded and how it can be evaluated. In addition, the legal situation regarding data protection and evaluation of the recordings would have to be clarified.

Overall, however, the BVG is optimistic that such a project can be implemented and can contribute to improving traffic. However, the exact implementation is still open and depends on further investigations and agreements with the relevant authorities.

It remains to be seen how the discussion and evaluation of the cameras will develop to monitor bus traces in Berlin. However, the BVG has made it clear that it will do everything to improve the traffic situation for its buses and to keep the bus traces of false parks.
