Berlin and the embarrassing failure in the honor of the late Candy pilot Gail Halvorsen: From a monument to the plaque
Berlin again fails to build a reasonable memorial for the late Candy pilot Gail Halvorsen. Instead of the planned monument, there is only a simple plaque. This is a great disappointment and Berlin should be ashamed of this handling.
After the death of Gail Halvsen last year, many parties, including the SPD, CDU and FDP, demanded a monument to the pilot who distributed sweets to the Berlin population during the air bridge. Although Halvorsen was modest during his lifetime to demand this, it was important to obtain the consent of his family and implement the promised honor.
The memory of the air bridge and the role of Halvorsen are increasingly fade. An appropriate monument could emphasize the human side of the air bridge and illustrate the importance of the campaign for Berlin.
It is also important to thank the Americans and America for their commitment in Ukraine and to appreciate their support in defending our freedom.
The fact that Berlin did not manage to build a reasonable monument to Gail Halvsen is embarrassing and shows a lack of appreciation for the air bridge and its importance for the city. It is time for Berlin to comply with its promises and appreciate the Candy pilot.
