Berlin questions planned supply facilities for long-covid and me/CFS

In their coalition agreement in April, the CDU and SPD provided their plans to improve the care of patients with Long Covid, Post-VAC syndrome and ME/CFS. The declaration of intent provided for the establishment close to home, low -threshold and interdisciplinary contact points, which should also be funded financially. This gives people who suffer from a long-term consequences of a corona infection or vaccination as well as the multi-system disease ME/CFS that occur frequently appeared.

However, the Senate Department for Health in Berlin is now moving away from the binding statements. The project is questioned on request to implement the concept and the schedule. The authority currently sees no signs that the existing supply structures in Berlin would not be sufficient and that there would be a care emergency. Although low -threshold contact points could improve care, the Senate Department is not aware of any efforts to create such contact points for patients with ME/CFS. The situation is still open to long-covid and post-VAC, but according to the Senate Department, medical treatment and rehabilitation is not the responsibility of the state of Berlin, but the health, accident and pension insurance.

Self -help organizations and affected associations have been criticizing the poor supply situation and broken political promises for a long time. Already in the coalition agreement at the federal level, the traffic light alliance had agreed to create a Germany-wide network of competence centers and interdisciplinary outpatient clinics for long-term consequences of COVID-19 and ME/CFS. However, the Federal Ministry of Health has also moved away from this this year. Long-Covid outpatients exist in which aspects of ME/CFS are treated, but long waiting times of several months are often expected. Furthermore, most outpatient clinics only offer diagnostics, but no further care. Reports from affected testify that people with vaccination damage or a ME/CFS disease developed independently of Corona are not accepted in many places. The only ME/CFS consultation at the Charité in Berlin has been overcrowded and can also only diagnose, not further treat.

The current developments again skill lightly on the existing supply gaps and the lack of specialized contact points. The previous measures and structures do not seem to be sufficient to meet the needs of those affected. Better care and treatment for people with Long Covid, Post-VAC syndrome and ME/CFS is urgently required to improve your quality of life and enable you to adequately support them. It remains to be hoped that politics will comply with its commitments and will implement the necessary measures to improve care as soon as possible.
