Berlin: Investigations into politically motivated crimes in the police service - over 100 procedures since the beginning of 2022.

The State Criminal Police Office Berlin has initiated or processed at least 102 criminal investigation procedures since the beginning of 2022 on suspicion of politically motivated crimes in the police service. In 78 cases, it was an insult, in eleven cases, in ten cases about sedition, in nine cases symbols of unconstitutional or terrorist organizations and once a possible violation of the war weapons control law. Of the 102 procedures, 38 are still open, four cases were concluded with a penalty order and a procedure was charged with a criminal judge. A total of 61 procedures were discontinued.

In addition to the criminal proceedings, there were also 61 internal disciplinary proceedings against civil servants who were assigned to politically motivated offense. By the end of August, six procedures were legally completed, two of them with fines and four with the termination of the procedure.

The Greens MEPs who had made the request critically commented on the results. They consider the high number of politically motivated offense as evidence of the structural dimension of right -wing extremism within the police. They demand that investigations against police officers should be carried out by independent bodies, since many examinations have so far been discontinued.

Local effects:
The knowledge of politically motivated crimes in the police service gives a particularly critical light on the security authorities in Berlin. Such incidents can seriously impair the trust of citizens in the police and lead to further polarization in society. It is crucial that the authorities take effective measures to combat right -wing extremism within the police and to restore trust. This is the only way to ensure that the police objectively and impartially fulfilled their tasks and the security of all Berlin citizens is guaranteed.
