The planned extension of the A100 in Berlin could develop into a nightmare for the city's club culture. In particular between the Treptower Park and Ostkreuz S-Bahnhof, there are five clubs that attract thousands of visitors from all over the world every week. The politicians disagree about the further procedure.

The district mayor of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Clara Herrmann, recently went on a club tour, but not for dancing, but about the worries of the operators. The 16th phase of the A100 is already in progress and is scheduled to lead from Neukölln to Treptower Park at the end of 2024. However, the federal project also provides for a 17th section to cross the Spree and lead the S-Bahn towards the Ostkreuz in parallel. Exactly on this route have been several clubs for years.

Clara Herrmann believes that the construction of the highway would mean the end of the club scene. She explains that the locations of the clubs would have to be abandoned and therefore no longer have a home. In addition, she describes the motorway construction in the densely populated region of Berlin as absurd and criticizes the destruction of the neighborhoods and cultural locations. The alternative and club culture is an important part of the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Herrmann promises the clubs to stop the motorway construction.

The following clubs would be affected by the extension of the A100:

  1. The "Else" on the district border between Treptow and Friedrichshain, known for their green terrace and the converted ship containers.

  2. The "Club Ost" on the Alt-Stralau street, which is housed in a historic factory building on the property and offers direct access to the Spree.

  3. The "Renate" on the Alt-Stralau street, a techno club that was founded in 2007 and is also known for drag shows. There are also studios and studios.

  4. The "FIPS" on the Margraveum, on the 6000 square meter area of construction cars, workshops and rehearsal rooms.

  5. The ": // About Blank" on the Margraveamm, which has existed since 2010 and offers both concerts, parties, discussion events and cinema as well as recording studios and rehearsal rooms. The area of the club should serve as a parking space for construction site vehicles in summer.

  6. All affected clubs have temporary lease contracts and use so -called residual areas. Lutz Leichsenring, board member of the club commission, emphasizes the importance of the clubs as the spaces of the meeting in a polarized society. The club scene is also an important economic factor because it employs hundreds of employees and pays taxes. Lichsen ring therefore demands a worst-case scenario to protect the clubs.

A round table with club operators and cultural senator Joe Chialo (CDU) is planned in autumn. While the Greens reject the expansion of the A100, the district association of the Union assumes a further construction, since it would improve traffic and quality of life in the residential areas. However, one does not want to allow the A100 and the clubs to be played against each other, commented Kurt Wansner (CDU). The FDP also sees the situation calmly and emphasizes that club culture has always lived from change and needed space for intermediate use.

Even if the expansion of the A100 does not take place, the clubs are not automatically to safety. In this case, the House of Representatives could decide a new land use plan that provides for apartments. The FDP supports this option because the living space in the city is scarce. It is proposed to maintain the current use and to combine business, living and club operations with intelligent urban planning.

Despite the tense situation, an upcoming opening was announced on Friday. The club "Future on the Ostkreuz" moves into the Alt-Stralau street and is also on the possible motorway route. The decision about the further course of the A100 and the preservation of the clubs is still pending and will be the subject of the round table in autumn.
