ARD storms the digital European Championship report with the millions of audience
unbroken enthusiasm for the UEFA Euro 2024: ARD reaches millions of audience on all channels
The football European championship in their own country has delighted millions of people. The ARD has reached a record audience with its extensive reporting. Especially in the area of digitization, ARD has established itself as a point of contact for football fans.
From start to finish, 17 games were shown live in the first, all 51 games were completely broadcast as audiovisual report. In addition, there were countless contributions on the ARD digital platforms as well as documentaries and reports in the media library. The ARD reporting on the UEFA Euro 2024 was a complete success.
Tom Buhrow, the director of the WDR responsible for the euro, is happy about the success: "With our reporting - on all channels and almost around the clock - we have reached millions of people. It is gratifying that we could make a contribution to a great football summer in Germany."
The livestreams of the games have been called up over 50 million times. So many calls have never been recorded at a tournament. The accompanying documentaries in the ARD media library were also in great demand. For example, the documentary "Germany. Football. Summer fairy tale?" Called around 900,000 times, while "unity and law and diversity" recorded around 400,000 calls. The feature "completely detached", which was specially produced for the media library, reached a total of over 300,000 calls. In addition, two more episodes of the feature will be published shortly.
The ARD also reached a large audience on the Internet. The sports show's web offer has recorded around two million visits every day since the beginning of the European Championship. The sports show reached millions of people on social media. Almost 4.5 million people visited the Instagram page of the sports show every day, and the content of the sports show has been viewed over 40 million times on YouTube since the beginning of the tournament.
The audio transmission of the euro was exclusively transmitted by the ARD on the radio and digital. For the first time, all games were broadcast in full length as audio stream. On average, the audio streams were called up around 100,000 times per game. In total, the live streams were called up around six million times. At the round of 16 between Austria and Turkey, around 880,000 streams was achieved.
Karl Valks, team leader of the ARD and sports director of the WDR, explains: “Our goal before the tournament was to be a companion in everyday life for the people in the country. We offered the European Championship podcast and live audio comments of all games that you could listen to on the way in the train or in the car. In lunch break you could briefly check the news in the sports show app and on the evening. Watch TV broadcasts directly from the stadium and then take part in the moody pub quiz.
The ARD also achieved best values for the transmissions on television. The two best visited games were the quarter -finals between Germany and Spain and the preliminary round game of the German team against Switzerland, in which over 26 million viewers each switched on.
The ARD was bleed out with the "Sportschau EM pub quiz". The entertaining program from the Bochum cult pub "Zum Kuhhirten" was watched on average by 1.7 million people. Market shares of over 25 percent were regularly achieved in younger people.
The final of the UEFA Euro 2024 is also broadcast on the ARD. The final between Spain and England will run live in the first next Sunday. The show is moderated by Esther Sedlaczek and Alexander Bommes in Berlin. Almuth Schult and Bastian Schweinsteiger contribute their expertise. Tom Bartels will comment on the game, supported by Thomas Hitzlsperger. Thomas Broich will be an expert in the audio-lental report. Following the game, the last edition of the "Sportschau EM pub quiz" is broadcast with moderator Stephanie Müller-Spirra.
