Back pain, depression, asthma and the lung disease COPD are possible complications. According to AOK, there is a risk of around twice as high compared to normal weights for obese people. Heart diseases, diabetes and colon cancer also appear much more frequently in obese people.

The AOK health atlas also provides information about the distribution of obese people in the various districts of Berlin. Accordingly, only around six percent of the AOK insured persons are obese in the neighborhood around Immanuelkirchstrasse in Prenzlauer Berg. Nowhere else in Berlin are there so few obese people. The top value of obesity, on the other hand, is the Oberspree district in the Treptow-Köpenick district, where around 19 percent of the AOK insured persons are affected. That is three times as much as in the neighborhood around Immanuelkirchstrasse.
A particularly large number of people suffering from obesity can be found in socially disadvantaged neighborhoods. According to the AOK, residents of these districts are exposed to a 13 percent higher risk of obesity compared to residents of the richest neighborhood.
There is a clear difference in the obesity density between different areas. According to the AOK health atlas, there are often only a few hundred meters between areas with low and high obesity density. For example, 7.5 percent of the AOK insured by obesity in Berlin-Mitte in Berlin-Mitte are affected, while 11.5 percent of AOK customers have been diagnosed with obesity in the adiposity.
The study also shows that unemployed people have a 22 percent higher risk of obesity compared to employees. According to a spokeswoman for the AOK Nordost, the distribution of obesity in Berlin could be attributed to the social differences of the city. However, other factors such as demographic characteristics could also play a role.
According to the Robert Koch Institute, around 23 percent of the population were obese in 2012. However, more recent numbers are not yet available. The AOK numbers are considered "almost representative" because the AOK Nordost is one of the largest health insurance companies in Berlin.
