Cancellation of the exhibition 'Of Love': Divergence between the district office and artists
The planned exhibition “Of Love” in the renowned rk gallery unfortunately has to be canceled. The exhibition was originally scheduled to take place from August 23rd to November 13th, 2024, with a vernissage on August 22nd, 2024. However, when setting up the exhibition, the district office discovered that the artists' political stance was not compatible with that of the district office.
It became clear that the differences of opinion between the district office and the artists were so great that no agreement could be reached. In particular, the portrayal of October 7th as a “genocide in Gaza” without mentioning the events of October 7th, 2023 was a central point of contention. The district office is determined not to provide a forum for such a representation, even if it calls into question the freedom of art.
The decision to cancel the exhibition is based on the principle that certain political statements and representations are incompatible with the values and principles of the district office. It is important that exhibition venues are aware of the messages and views they support and present.
Despite the cancellation of the exhibition “Of Love”, the district office emphasizes that freedom of art is a valuable asset that must be protected. It's not about censoring art, but rather about creating awareness of the responsibility that comes with presenting works of art.
It is regrettable that this cancellation had to happen, but the district office stands by its decision and remains committed to bringing artistic diversity and freedom of expression in line with society's basic values.
