75 years dpa: A ceremony for journalism and media diversity in Berlin
An impressive anniversary was celebrated in the capital: 75 years of German press agency (dpa)! This great event took place in the trendy Museum of Communication and was all about the future of the media. Around 300 inquisitive students immersed the world of journalism and were allowed to take part in an exciting news camp. Here they were not only entertained, but also explained how important careful news and the associated responsibility are.
In the middle of the celebrations, Daniel Schöningh, the powerful chairman of the DPA supervisory board, urgently proclaimed: "The dpa can-and must!-remain what it has been for 75 years now: a lighthouse in the sea of disinformation, a synonym for faithful and reliability." It was an urgent call that underlined the urgency that has a strong, independent news agency today - in view of the war in Middle East and the global challenges such as the conflict in Ukraine.
A look into the future
Peter Kropsch, the at least as impressive chair of the DPA management, emphasized the valuable legacy of the dpa, which is considered a solidarity act for media diversity. "The model of the dpa strengthens and protects the entire media ecosystem of our country in all its diversity and all its forms," emphasized Kropsch and promised to use the agency's energy to remain true to these principles.
In the afternoon, there was a lively discussion about the responsibility of the large social media platforms when dealing with false news. Experts from the fact check area heard a good 150 guests who presented real solutions and strategies to combat disinformation. The topic of how AI-based counterfeits can be exposed was also a hotly discussed point. Innovative approaches were shown so that regional media can also fight this threat.
Another highlight of the evening was the exclusive preliminary premiere of the exhibition "News - News", which is directed with competence in news journalism. The needs of a modern, informed society play a central role here. This exhibition is particularly aimed at young people and remains to be seen in the museum until September 2025-a concept that is supported with the media content and the know-how of the dpa and inspires future journalists.
The German Press Agency, founded in 1949, not only celebrates its past success, but also looks decisively into the future-always driven by the tireless goal of reliably and independent. With around 1000 journalists and a range in seven languages, the dpa remains a strong carpenter on the cutting edge of journalism, which stands for truth and reliability.
