May 1st in Berlin: Why is your own commitment missing? Politics and party on the day of work
The officially canceled MyFest nevertheless took place when thousands of people roamed through Kreuzberg and Neukölln on May 1st and populated the streets. Pubs and Spätis made the crowds on the sidewalks, while thousands of people celebrated in Görlitzer Park. In view of this scenery, the question arises as to why Berlin missed the chance to make the day of work a real political holiday. Why are there no appearances of local bands or folk dance groups? Why are no discussion rounds organized? Why does Berlin offer nothing to citizens and visitors? Only the left and the party used the opportunity to bring political messages to the stage through music.
In recent years, May 1st in Berlin has developed into a kind of carnival. This has caused the few violent demonstrators to continue to isolate themselves. Now it is time for the Senate and the districts to prepare for this new situation. It is no longer about pacifying the SO36. The former battlefield has already been carried out and has lost its symbolic meaning for the left -wing extremist scene. The police have shown that it can keep the "revolutionary 1st May 1st demonstration" in chess. Now the city has to prove that it can also combine politics and party on May 1st, and not just relying on the police.
The following table shows some historical facts about May 1st in Berlin:
| Year | Event |
|: —-: |: ——— |
| 1987 | First major demonstration of May 1st in Berlin-Kreuzberg |
| 1990 | Berlin Wall falls, which makes May 1st in Berlin a special holiday |
| 2001 | First "Revolutionary 1st May Demonstration" in Kreuzberg |
