The role of industrial research: A call to strengthen innovative strength in Germany

The German Industrial Consumption Association Konrad Zuse e.V. (Zuse Community) warns of a possible endangerment of industrial research in Germany. In the context of a revised draft of the Federal budget in 2025, representatives of the association express concern about inadequate financial resources that are necessary for effective research in industry. Industrial research is essential for coping with important social challenges.

With special attention to the economic and social transformation processes, the ZUE community has emphasized the following aspects that underline the urgent need for more support for industrial research:

  • The stagnation of the economy and the excessive bureaucracy inhibit innovative projects.
  • In the current situation, creative solutions are indispensable to cope with the challenges of climate change and ecological transformation.

Scientific Vice President of the Zuse Community, Prof. Dr. Steffen Tobisch, emphasizes that the existing budget for programs such as the central innovation program Mittelstand (ZIM) is far too low to set the urgently needed impulses for research. At least 950 million euros, supplemented by an annual increase by five percent, would be necessary to meet the requirements.

A look at the practical contributions of industrial research illustrates the positive influence on social challenges. Here are some innovative examples:

  • The German Institute for Textile and Faser Research Denkendorf (DITF) have developed a system for biological water treatment, which aims at pollutants-free building and gray water management. This promotes sustainable use of water in households and public facilities.
  • The Institute of Wood Technology Dresden (IHD) has developed heat -reflecting wood coatings that reduce the heating of buildings and reduce energy consumption for cooling, which is particularly important in times of climate change.
  • The Institute for Automation and Communication Magdeburg (IFAK) enables an effective removal of microplastics through innovative approaches to wastewater treatment, which improves the quality of water.

The need to strengthen innovative ability in Germany is taken seriously by the ZUE community. It is required that innovation and transfer-oriented research is not only promoted in terms of selection but systematically.
