Future plan for Treptow-Köpenick: New daycare centers, schools and green spaces!

On January 6, 2026, the Treptow-Köpenick district will focus on updating the Strategic Infrastructure Concept (SIKo), which will bring fundamental changes to the approach to district planning. The SIKo update deals with essential areas such as daycare planning, school planning and sports area development planning. These measures aim to ensure integrated and coordinated planning of social infrastructure facilities. Berlin.de reports that current needs are being determined based on existing capacity and a projected population.

The need for an update arises from the constantly growing population pressure in the district. The concept not only includes the assessment of future needs, but also the derivation of concrete measures for social infrastructure facilities. Particular emphasis is placed on the challenge of “land security”, as the availability of suitable land is increasingly decreasing. Public areas for extensions or new buildings should therefore be systematically checked for their suitability.

Results of collaboration

Updating the SIKo requires close cooperation with the responsible Senate departments. The results determined for this will be incorporated into a Berlin-wide strategy of integrated infrastructure planning (SIIP). This strategy is justified by the dynamic population development supported by the new population forecast for the years 2021 to 2040. The urban development office is responsible for the SIKo, while the Planning Association for City and Space eG, which already worked on the SIKo in 2016, offers the district support and is also involved in its further development.

Through the close integration of district area planning and construction projects, social facilities such as daycare centers, schools, libraries, playgrounds and green spaces are to be sustainably secured and expanded. The concept development will be carried out between September 2023 and November 2025 to meet the challenge of the increasing need for social and green infrastructure.

In summary, it can be said that the update of the SIKo represents a crucial element for the future of the Treptow-Köpenick district and aims to meet the growing challenges of dynamic population development.
