ZDK calls for CO2 loosening: necessary measures for the auto industry

In an unprecedented call in politics, the German car industry takes the helm into its hand! On the crucial day, on which the Federal Council advises on the rescue of jobs in the crisis-shaped automotive industry, the Central Association of German Motor Motor Show (ZDK) is pushing for a drastic relaxation of the strict CO2 requirements of the EU. If politics does not respond, the manufacturers and trade are imminent!

ZDK Vice President Thomas Peckruhn is concerned: "The statutory reduction in CO2 fleet limit values is completely over the economic reality." With urgent words, he demands an enforcement adaptation: "This mechanism urgently needs to be adapted to realities." He also speaks to put the planned revision of the fleet limit values by one year in order to give the manufacturers an urgently needed buffer.

Federal Council under pressure

The Federal Council meeting today is of crucial importance! Lower Saxony and Saarland have submitted amendments to secure jobs in the automotive industry. In determined words, the Federal Council notes that the upcoming gradual lowering of CO2 fleet emissions from 2025 will be a significant risk for Germany. Particularly dangerous: High fines could shake the entire industry!

"We are firmly convinced that the CO2 reduction goals for 2025 are not implementable under the current market conditions," warns Peckruhn. The sales pressure on electric cars must increase enormously so that the strict EU requirements can be met. But the reality looks dark: the acquisition costs for electric vehicles are still far too high, and the charging infrastructure is not sufficiently expanded-no wonder that many customers remain skeptical!

alarming sales figures

The sales figures speak a clear language: in August the sales of new battery electric cars (BEV) broke in 69 percent in Germany - a real shock! The decline of 44 percent throughout the EU is also alarming. "We are in daily contact with our customers and see a deeply pronounced reluctance of buyers to electric cars," said Peckruhn, who urges the concerns of the industry.

In view of this threatening situation, the Federal Government will present a catalog of measures on October 24, which aims to boost the slow automotive economy. With this call, the ZDK wants to vigorously support the over 40,000 car dealerships and the associated 470,000 employees and intervene in the proactive design of the future of the industry!
