World Refugee Day 2025: Spandau sets signs of humanity!
Berlin, Deutschland - On June 20, 2025, the international world refugee day is celebrated worldwide under the motto "Humanity knows no boundaries". This date, which has been awarded by the United Nations every year since 2001, is intended to point out the dramatic circumstances under which millions of people are forced to leave their homeland. According to UNHCR, 122.1 million people had already fled war and displacement at the end of April 2023, two million more than in the previous year, which illustrates the continuing urgency of the Situation.
This day is not only an opportunity to present the shocking numbers, but also the realities of life of the refugees and the complex circumstances that lead to their escape. Many leave their homes due to a combination of war, conflicts, political persecution and economic need. The situation is made more difficult by the fact that protection seekers are often confronted with dehumanizing methods when recording, including violence and attacks by border officials.
role of the initiatives on site
In the Spandau district, numerous free carriers, projects and volunteer organizations make a significant contribution to enabling refugees and participation in social life. Nina, the head of the project "The Accompanying Program - Learning by Doing" and the psychosocial prevention project of the Berlin city mission, emphasizes the fundamental importance of peace as a human right and the need to reduce barriers.
Britta Marschke, managing director of the "Society for Intercultural Coexiacity GGmbH", emphasizes the 25-year work for humans and humanity. A central point of contact in the Spandau district office is the "Integration Staff Office", which takes care of flight, project initiation, project support and the support of volunteers in refugee work.
Current numbers and reports
The UNHCR publishes the report "Global Trends" annually on June 20, which deals with changes and trends in the expulsion of people. The representations are based on data from different sources. At the end of 2023 it was estimated that around 117.4 million people are protected or supported by UNHCR. This number includes refugees as well as domestic and other personnel groups that require humanitarian aid.
The World Refugee Day therefore does not constitute a purely statistical occasion, but calls for increased political will to find solutions that actually promote the protection of refugees and their possibilities for reintegration into a dignified life. The lack of political will often inhibits the implementation of effective solutions that could help those seeking protection to rebuild their life in dignity.
