Water quality in the large pond of the People's Park Friedrichshain in danger: fish death and algae problems - measures planned

environmental impacts due to poor water quality in the large pond in the Volkspark Friedrichshain

In the Volkspark Friedrichshain, the artificial large pond, which usually represents a popular local recreation area, is currently causing a stir due to its severely deteriorated water quality. This has led to an alarming fish death that has been observed since July 2.

The main problem lies in an extremely high aquatic plant and algae growth, which hinders the operation of the large fountains in the pond. Due to the stagnant movement of water, oxygen is lacking, which is particularly life -threatening for the fish. Experts suspect that the nutrient entries from the fall, heavy rain events and possibly also favored the growth of the plants and algae by careless bread feeds.

In order to get to the bottom of the causes, an investigation laboratory was commissioned to carry out a water examination. The first analyzes indicate that the algae may hand over toxins that could be responsible for fish death. It is now being checked which measures have to be taken to improve the situation and prevent further damage to the environment.

The green space office has already reacted and installed a ventilation device to bring at least a small amount of oxygen into the pond. Nevertheless, the question remains whether the fish can be saved and how long-term the problem of high plant and algae growth can be solved.

It is crucial that measures are taken to restore the water quality in the large pond and avoid future environmental damage. The condition of the pond in the Volkspark Friedrichshain serves as an example of the effects of human activities on the natural environment and underlines the urgency to find sustainable solutions for the protection of our waters.
