Postponed meeting: Baerbock Budapest trip canceled

The latest diplomatic complications between Germany and Hungary was canceled the journey planned for Monday by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock to Budapest at short notice. The Hungarian side canceled the appointment with Baerbock, which was regretted by the external office.

The cancellation was made in connection with the controversial visit by the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Russia's President Vladimir Putin, who caused displeasure within the EU. Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that Orban acted in his role as Prime Minister of Hungary and not as a representative of the EU. Orban's solo purpose was regarded by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as a danger to the credibility of the European Union.

The trip from Baerbock to Budapest was originally intended to have talks with Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto. Despite the cancellation, it was emphasized that a personal meeting between the two outdoor ministers should be made up for later.

The situation shows the increasing tensions within the EU due to different foreign policy positions within the Member States. The incident illustrates the challenges of coordination of foreign policy within the European Union and the importance of coordinated diplomatic efforts.
